TV Production Company seeks budding entrepreneurs for new show
TV Production Company Two Four Broadcast is planning a series with perfume and cosmetic guru Jo Malone. Jo will give twelve ‘tabletop’/small businesses or individuals the advice and support they need to get their products onto high-street shelves. A great opportunity for anyone who has a unique product but perhaps not have the resources to turn it into ‘the next big thing’.
The series will concentrate on products in four categories: Home & Garden, Children & Toys, Food & Drink and Fashion Accessories.
If you already sell your products on a small scale - it doesn’t matter how many were sold or where – then this could be the next step up. You need to have designed, made and sold the product, it must be a product not a service. Successful applicants will be teamed up with industry experts who can help them push their business forward.
See flyer for more details, and email: newbrands@twofour.co.uk to receive more information and an application form.
STUDENT WRITERS: WIN £1,000 PLUS THE LITERARY TRIP OF A LIFETIME
2nd February 2010; British GQ magazine and the Norman Mailer Writers Colony announce a new annual competition for non-fiction writing.
The winner will be invited to spend a month at the Norman Mailer Writers Colony, a residential educational centre based at the legendary author's former home in Provincetown, Massachusetts, USA. All travel, accommodation and expenses covered, plus a cheque for £1,000 and the chance to be published in a future issue of Britain's leading men's magazine. Runners-up will receive cash prizes and the chance to be published in GQ.
Dylan Jones, Editor of GQ, comments "We hear a lot of gloomy predictions these days about the future of print journalism, the crisis in old media, the shrinking possibilities for serious long-form writing and reporting on the world. But we at GQ believe, as do our friends at the Norman Mailer Writers Colony, that there will always be a need and a place for brilliant narrative, non-fiction, whether that's journalism, criticism or memoir. Mailer called writing The Spooky Art. "You go in each morning," he said, "and there's a blank page. Maybe it takes five minutes, maybe it takes an hour. Sooner or later you start writing, and then the words begin to flow. Where does that come from? You can't pinpoint it. You always wonder, 'Will it stop tomorrow?'" For that reason I urge any student who hopes to avoid a bleak future in law or medicine to stop what they're doing and start writing now, today."
The awards will be judged by a panel including Editor of the TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT Sir Peter Stothard; award-winning novelist and critic Geoff Dyer; Canongate publisher Jamie Byng; bestselling novelist and Contributing Editor to GQ Tony Parsons; Condé Nast Managing Director and bestselling author Nicholas Coleridge; GQ Editor Dylan Jones; GQ Features Director Alex Bilmes; leading literary agent Ed Victor; publisher and investor Spas Roussev, and platinum-selling singer-songwriter Lily Allen.

TV training opportunity for under-represented groups
Middlesex and Top TV Academy have launched the Diversity Training Programme - Cascade - to provide training opportunities in television for under-represented groups, including paid placements.
Ten successful applicants will receive on-the-job training at a top independent TV production company, as well as workshops with media professionals and £8,000. Cascade, which is being funded by the Skillset TV Freelance Fund, an industry fund for TV freelancers, is designed to help underrepresented groups in the UK break into the TV industry, giving them valuable skills that will strengthen their case for work in the modern media.
The application process consists of two days of training for 60 candidates, from which a shortlist of 40 will be drawn up. Those 40 will then be interviewed by independent TV production companies and ten of them will be offered a six month contract with a TV company, including a ‘salary’ of £8,000.
Liz Mills, Managing Director of Top TV Academy, said: “The recent economic downturn is having a huge impact on job opportunities for new entrants to the TV industry. So a scheme that offers paid on-the-job training at this particular time will be hugely beneficial to the successful applicants.”
